Selection of materials for cooling systems in coastal power plants

The corrosion protection challenges of power plants in coastal areas

Advantages of SS316L Ball Valve:
1.Extremely strong and comprehensive corrosion resistance capability.
2.Wide temperature adaptation range.
3.Good weldability and machinability.
4.High intensity and long life.

However, in coastal power plants in countries like the United States and the Philippines, there has been a long-standing problem of chloride ion (Cl⁻) corrosion in the seawater cooling system. Although SS316L has excellent corrosion resistance, it faces some major challenges:

1.The seawater exhibits high Cl⁻ concentration (19,000 - 21,000 ppm), seasonal high temperatures (32°C), and the triple erosion effect of biological adhesion, which leads to the typical failure of SS316L valves.

2.Pitting and crevice corrosion: The critical pitting temperature (CPT) of 316L stainless steel in seawater at temperatures ≥ 50°C is only 25°C.
3.High-concentration Cl ion solutions accelerate the rupture of metal passivation films.

4.The cost and maintenance cost of the SSS316L ball valve are high.

The performance of UPVC valve bodies in the seawater cooling project

1.Resistance to chloride ions, highly corrosion-resistant: No corrosion weight loss even at 21,000 ppm of chloride ions.

2.Long service life:12 years (with actual operation duration of 5 years and no maintenance records).

3.High flow resistance coefficient: Kv = 210, which is 8% higher than that of SS316L.

4.Easy to maintain, with low maintenance costs and quick repair time: The disassembly and assembly of the double Union mechanism takes no more than 1.5 hours per time, reducing equipment downtime losses.

Comparison of Full-Cycle Costs between SS316L and UPVC

Taking the DN100 seawater cooling branch cut-off valve as an example, calculate the total cost over a period of 10 years

Item Pneuamtic PVC Ball Valve Pneumatic SS316L Ball Valve
Pneumatic Valve cost $150 $300
Annual inspection Cost $0 $20(Penetrant testing + Passivation treatment)
Sealing Replacement cost $10 every five years $20 every three years
Unexpected downtime losses $0 $40
Total cost over 10 years  $170 $560

Key parameters for technical and economic decision-making

For seawater cooling systems that meet the following conditions:

  • Operating temperature ≤60°C
  • Design pressure ≤PN16 (auxiliary cooling loops)
  • No cavitation risk UPVC valves vs. SS316L deliver:
    • 1.30% cost reduction (10-year horizon)
    •  2.Zero unplanned downtime (eliminating corrosion leaks)
    • 3. ASTM D1784 Class 12454-certified corrosion protection
