The application position of the knife gate valve in the slurry solution

The application position of the knife gate valve in the slurry solution

2026-03-30

In the rapidly developing pulp processing industry in Thailand, such as in areas like tapioca starch, sugar production, mining, and wastewater treatment, these pulps usually contain hard and sharp solid particles. During high-pressure and high-speed transportation, they cause continuous cutting and scouring of the internal components of the valves, leading to rapid wear, sealing failure, and even valve body perforation. Traditional general-purpose valves have extremely short lifespans under such conditions and high maintenance costs. Therefore, to address the challenge of severe wear, choosing a knife gate valve specifically designed for pulps will become a core decision for ensuring the reliability and economy of the system.

Comparison of the knife gate valve with other valves in the slurry solution

The wear caused by the slurry mainly consists of erosion wear and abrasive wear. The high speed flowing slurry carries solid particles, which continuously impact the valve seat, gate plate and the surface of the valve body flow channel.
The ordinary butterfly valves and gate valves will encounter:

  1.  The sealing area where the valve seat contacts the valve plate has been damaged, resulting in internal leakage, which affects the isolation effect and wastes energy.
  2. The remaining slurry medium clogs the valve, causing it to close improperly and leading to leakage.
  3. The actuator is overloaded. Due to wear, increased friction or jamming may cause the driving torque to exceed the design value, damaging pneumatic or electric actuators.

Advantages of the knife gate valve:

1. When the knife gate valve is fully opened, the gate plate fully retracts into the upper chamber of the valve body, forming a straight-through flow channel within the valve body that is basically consistent with the inner diameter of the connected pipeline. This allows the medium to pass through without obstruction, reducing pressure loss caused by valve throttling and the risk of local accumulation of solid particles.
2. With a thin knife-shaped gate plate, it can cut off fibers and lumps when closed; combined with an elastic valve seat (such as rubber, polyurethane) design, it achieves compression sealing. This effectively solves the problem of internal leakage due to insufficient closure of the pipeline caused by medium deposition.
3. The structure of the knife gate valve is lower in height and lighter in weight, making it easy to install in pipelines with limited space. It greatly simplifies the maintenance process and reduces downtime. This is particularly important for working conditions that require rapid replacement of wear parts or handling potentially clogged media (such as cassava starch slurry, fiber slurry), reducing long-term operation and maintenance costs.

A collection of targeted engineering solutions specifically addressing the specific challenge of treating Thai slurries and high-solid-content media. The fully-portable anti-blocking design of the gate valve, customizable wear-resistant/anti-corrosion treatment of key components, reliable bidirectional sealing capability, and convenient maintainability collectively constitute its irreplaceable position in the niche market.
