Stability practice of the million-cycle life pneumatic sanitary butterfly valve in the beer filling line

Stability practice of the million-cycle life pneumatic sanitary butterfly valve in the beer filling line

2026-04-24

As a tropical climate country, the brewing industries such as beer and fruit wine in the Philippines have been continuously expanding in scale. However, for our customers, in the beer filling process, the control valves of the conveying pipelines in front of the filling machines often encounter such challenges:

  1. Perform precise on-off operations at a frequency of several times per minute or even dozens of times, in order to achieve rapid and overflow-free filling of the bottles.
  2. After the completion of daily or batch production, the equipment must undergo on-site cleaning (CIP) and on-site sterilization (SIP) procedures. SIP typically involves saturated steam at temperatures above 121°C, lasting for 20-30 minutes. The combination of "frequent mechanical fatigue" and "periodic thermal shock" poses a severe challenge to valves, especially the core seals  and springs of their actuators. Common failures include premature hardening and cracking of the sealing material, leading to leakage, or the actuator experiencing insufficient opening and closing, reduced speed, and ultimately affecting filling accuracy and production line availability.

technology solution

In response to the operational requirements of the breweries in the Philippines, the double acting pneumatic sanitary butterfly valve made of SS304 material and connected by Tri-Clamp has become the key solution.

  1. At an air pressure of 2-8 bar, the valve plate can complete a 90° rotation within 1-2 seconds, enabling precise opening and closing of the medium flow channels between batches, reducing the impact of residual medium on the next batch, and using an air-driven actuator with a 1,000,000 cycle life, thereby reducing maintenance frequency and achieving a long service life.
  2. The valve body is made of SS304/SS316 stainless steel, which can withstand a temperature range of -20°C to 180°C and is suitable for high-temperature processes such as fermentation and sterilization. This ensures corrosion resistance in weakly acidic beer media and cleaning chemicals. The flow channel surface has been mechanically polished with Ra ≤ 0.8 μm, resulting in a smooth and non-adhesive surface that can quickly empty the medium and prevent residues from being carbonized during high-temperature sterilization, thus avoiding the formation of hygiene dead corners.
  3. PTFE seals should be given priority. They can withstand corrosion from alcohols, fruit acids, etc., and can maintain their elasticity and sealing performance even under continuous working temperatures of 120°C and short-term steam shock. They can effectively resist humidity and heat aging, ensuring zero leakage sealing of the valve.

In the Philippine brewing industry, the double-acting pneumatic butterfly valve effectively addresses the issues of slow response, poor sealing, and frequent maintenance of traditional valves through precise batch switching control. With its rapid opening and closing capability of 1-2 seconds, combined with the SS304 material and Tri-Clamp connection, it not only enhances production efficiency but also reduces the risk of cross-contamination. It is the preferred solution for upgrading brewing equipment in tropical climates.
